Yes dear, I'm doing live performances today!
This one is to commemorate Buju Banton - I know this tour must be a bit stressful because of all of the controversy its been getting from the gay population but funny thing is, the more they picket, the more noise they make, and the harder they work to ban the artist, hmmmm - we actually need to thank them for their efforts because its been the BEST promotional tactic for the show.
Now, because of the gay population EVERYONE knows when BUJU is in town and the response from the rest of civilization has been extreme - yeah, they have to change venues to make accommodations but now they are adding dates and doing back to back shows just to please the growing fan base.
damn... if only I could get them to promote this website! lol

I'm disappointed in this post.
You seem like a nice lady. How can you have no compassion for the gays-lesbians-bipeople-transgenders of the world? When we hear BoomByeBye, we hear a musically-genius song calling for our death. An international hymn to genocide. Probably the most famous piece of hate music in the world, and a call that has been heard millions and millions of times. I ask you to look deeper into your heart for why that bothers so many people. And that we are a social justice movement looking to uplift our brothers and sisters everywhere.
Now, on your argument. Obviously, this is a difficult situation all around, and, as a gay person, I don't think Buju and Tracii McGregor care to downplay it, precisely because of the publicity. BUT, I believe buju would be a world superstar--and even richer--than he is now were he not reaping the hate he sowed. He hurt the gays, they hurt him, now everyone's hurting each other.
That said...the controversy is in some ways a positive thing, because I don't see any other forum where dancehall artists are forced to discuss the condition of the least of the least among us, which is the GLBT population of whatever country you're looking at.
Can I recommend gayjamaicawatch.blogspot.com for a good place to get the gay jamaican take on all this?
i guess i' m disappointed twice by this post...
earlier you'd written: "I don't get offended by the music, mainly because its practically a cultural norm - we're not fans of the gay community. Simple."
who's we?
do you know you certainly have gay family? cousins? aunts? uncles? friends? fellow jamaicans? are you ignoring their plight? who is we?
Really and truly when I think about the gay population, I still did not wrap my mind around the fact that there are and will always be gay Jamaicans as well.
I'm happy you can sense that I am a nice lady but I am also happy that you can also sense that I have asshole tendencies as well.
There is no way under the sun for me to use this site to express myself without offending someone at some point. Especially when my goal is not necessarily to promote nor bash anyone.
Call it selfish, but the site is to express my thoughts and how I feel - and is focused on the music that I love.
I completely understand why the gay population is upset with Buju. I would be too... if I was gay. But I'm not.
You can't expect me to be offended for you because honestly, I can't relate. I love Buju because I love music. I don't know him personally. I saw a clip of him on youtube and he actually seemed kinda weird. But I still admire his music.
Not to mention I'm trifling, and I love that song in particular (Boom Bye Bye) because of the beat and I like to dance to it. I don't even pay attention to the words.
When I hear that song in a club I get excited, not because I have a problem with gay people but because that preps me for the next song to follow, which is usually "Girl FLEEEXXXX, time to have seeex!"
I use to promote for gay parties that catered to black gay men in the DC area.. not because I cared about promoting homosexuals but because I work for money. Many of my Jamaican friends and family had a lot to say about it and my car was ALWAYS filled with interesting flyers but I could care less what they had to say because as far as I'm concerned you have no say on how I decide to make my money unless you're offering a better opportunity. And even then, its still my decision.
Not to mention, I met a lot of cool gay black men along the way.
Now, the only problem that I have with the gay population - which is probably more extreme with the Jamaican gay population is the fact that many live their life manipulating others.
Many live their entire lives lying about who they are even to the people who are closest to them. It escalates to a point where they lie about everything all of the time because now its just their way of life.
They naturally assume that no one accepts them so they create a facade or an alter ego to carry on their daily living and I'm not alright with that.
Be you. The people who mind don't matter and the people who matter don't mind.
I sometimes wonder if homosexuality is something one is born with or something that was learned from molestation or curiosity.
But regardless, the Lord made everyone's skin thick enough to deal with their battles.
You cant be disappointed in me for not being passionate about the things that you hold dear to your heart.
The only thing I can offer you is to be open minded about it, which I think I am.
I'm not going to act like I wouldn't be upset if I anticipated a Buju show..or better yet if I PAID for a Buju show and there are rallies outside and a sign on the door saying the show was canceled.
Yeah I hear you, its for a greater cause, its for a bigger movement - but I don't wanna hear that. I wanna hear Buju. Why are his fans being penalized?
It doesnt make me like Buju any less and it doesnt make me like the gay population any more. But the situation would upset me because I came for music. I came for Buju - but instead I went from about to get EXACTLY what I want to getting a whole bunch of something that I didnt want. Idk, I can only speak for myself.
yeah, it IS a complicated topic, isn't it?
But see the good stuff that comes out of it? hello, I'm shum from San Francisco. I enjoy reading your blog, and checking out the links to your music. Thanks for the long and heartfelt words you've expressed here. All the blessings, and I hope your blog blows up huge!
(That said, i'm originally from houston...I won't hold the Dallas thing against you :))
Nice to meet you Shum - thanks for supporting the website. I truly appreciate! Btw, when I say DC.. I mean Washington DC. Also, thanks for the blessings!! I'm trying...
