YOUNG BLACK MEN ARE DESTINED TO SUCCEED AT URBAN PREP ACADEMY

For the second year in a row, 100% of the graduating seniors of the Urban Prep Academy has been accepted into a four year college or university!!

As much as love that percentage, lets take it a step higher..

Do you remember when "they" all said that Black Men were destined to be dead or in jail? Well hear this, Urban Prep Academy is the nations first all boys public charter high school and it consists entirely of African American students!!!

Tim King, the founder of Urban Prep Academy stated, "It's a huge day for us, the fact that we've been able to have 100 percent of our graduates admitted to college for the second year in a row. The majority of these students came to us reading below grade level. And our jobs is to do our best to work with them each and every day to accelerate them to a point where they can get into college."

The graduating class consisted of 104 students, many of which received scholarships to further their education.

Eighteen year old Alfonso Henderson was accepted to 21 universities and will receive $719,000 in scholarships for his college career studying law. He's currently considering Yale, Harvard or Wheaton College.

One of the honored mothers of the graduating class stated, "I am so proud of my son... going to Cornell. They only want us to pay $200 a year, so it's like a full ride to me."

Urban Prep now has three campuses and they want to continue the trend throughout the nation, so be on the look out... your son can be a part of a POSITIVE statistic!!

AND THE WAIT CONTINUES..... THE LATEST ON THE BUJU BANTON CASE

The wait has been the most consistent part of the Buju Banton drug case. Since the case started back in 2009 we've been highly anticipating the fate of one of reggae's greatest musicians, now fast forward to 2011, and the wait continues.

This past Friday, the 12 member jury intended to give their final verdict but by the end of the work day, a decision was still not made and the trial is expected to continue tomorrow, 02.22.11.

Before the jury retired on Friday, the prosecution led by Jim Preston asked the jury to find Buju guilty on all four charge brought against him:

** Conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine.

**Attempting to possess five kilograms or more of cocaine.

**Knowingly and intentionally possessing a firearm in furtherance of and during the course of a drug trafficking crime.

**Aiding and abetting others in using a communication facility in the commission of a felony.

However, Buju's lawyer David Oscar Markus states that the US Government failed to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that Buju Banton, real name Mark Myrie actually committed these crimes and is asking the jury for a not guilty verdict on all four counts.

EVENT COVERAGE: I OCTANE LIVE @ TEMPTATIONS 2.0 [BROOKLYN, NY 02.09.11]

WHAT A NIGHT!!!

I'm just happy I have the video clips so I can re-live the moment, again and again!

I OCTANE came out to show BROOKLYN some love.. and guess wha?? Brooklyn showed love right back!!

I was wondering what the deal was, why the I OCTANE show didn't fall on a Friday or Saturday night, but di way TEMPTATIONS did RAM pon a Wednesday, it shut me up QUICK!

Say wha yuh waa say!! WAH GWAAN WEDNESDAYS is definitely the hottest Wednesday night party in New York City so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

This was my first time at Temptations and what can I say, I was pleased.

Security had the place on lock so I felt safe, the venue is pretty big so I was able to roam around. They stay open later than the after hours spot, the price for a drink was decent and more importantly, di vibes did NICE!!!

People dancing and enjoying themselves with either a drink in hand or a bottle close by. The early warm juggling was on point so I had to stop and buss ah wine fi di people dem. Even the opening acts was good entertainment, which I'm usually skeptical about, cause if you know like I know.. its can easily be a hit or miss.

I enjoyed chatting it up with a few people and taking a few pics, but the INSTANT they said I OCTANE was coming to the stage, its like everyone in the room was faceless. Yes man, I was focused.. It's time to see the SHOW!!!

And what a show it was!

I OCTANE gave a great presentation!! Mi nuh inna di rush ting so I was happy that he gave a lengthy performance. He sang his main hits and gave the crowd some new songs I JUST started hearing on my latest dancehall mix.

You shoulda see how di people in deh ah BEG fi ah FORWARD when OCTANE start sing di song pon di KARMA riddim, "Mama You Alone".. so yuh dun know seh everybody was on a higher medz.

YO!!! Di show did SELL OFF so big up all who fi big up and all who made this show POSSIBLE. From the promoters to the bartenders to the security to the coat check team!!

The night was memorable, so TEMPTATIONS, I'll be seeing you again!! :)

YOU PROBABLY HAVE DIABETES... AND DON'T EVEN KNOW IT!!

I'm not trying to jinx you..

But it's official, studies show that minorities are less likely to know they have diabetes and/or hypertension than their white counterparts.

When I heard that, I blamed it on health insurance.

Everyone should have health insurance, but it just don't work like that. The worse part is, I hear crazy stories of people finding out they have diabetes because they passed out while walking down the street.

And trust me, that's not the way you want to find out.

Diabetes is a lifelong chronic illness that affects Black families worldwide and what many fail to realize is that if you at least get your regular check up and were aware of whats going on inside of your body, you would be able to manage the progression of the disease, before its too late.

I've been really thinking about this because a friend of mine is going to a funeral tomorrow. Why? Because her friend died of undiagnosed diabetes.

As I get older, I realize that adults are more afraid of the doctors office than the kids.. I guess its cause we don't get the promise of a lollipop at the end of the session. But it's REAL.. people are dying and I don't want the next funeral to be yours...... or mine!

My mommy always told me that your health comes before everything else!! So take her word for it and get a check up.. if you don't you'll never know what you could have prevented.
