On a Saturday like today, I feel like listening to Lutan Fyah's official street album entitled, "New Day", brought to you by Dejavu Records and DBeatzz Music.
Outside is too cold and rainy, so today I'll just picture myself at a reggae festival in Jamaica and simply float away. I'm a big fan of Lutan Fyah, I would love to see him peform live, but right now it doesn't even matter because he is currently live and in concert in my speakers.
It even includes a cool rendition of an old school favorite. Do you remember Prince Buster's 60s hit, "Hard Man Fi Dead"? Ahhhh, yes, I know I have an old soul!
So, I checked the prices for plane tickets to Jamaica around Independence Day (Aug. 6). ::sigh:: Ladies and gentlemen, let me be the one to tell you that they're already getting pricey!
It's definitely not too early to start planning your Dream Weekend experience, especially since early bird is the smartest way to go. This year makes it Jamaica's 50th year of independence so we ALL have something spectacular to celebrate!
This time around, I want to see what it's like to experience dream weekend. Once I get back, I can do a proper comparison. Either way, this is a once a year opportunity of some real authentic, laugh till your mouth hurts kind of fun and I am well overdue. So use this post as a reminder. Gather up your friends and get your plans together before plane tickets get ridiculous..
Vybz Kartel isn't as original as you thought, huh?
Nah, I'm just kidding. Some of my favorite "new age" dancehall tunes have used samples, riddims, and styles from the older generations. That alone shows you how foundation music and veteran artists impact modern day dancehall acts. They were the ones who paved the road for future success in the industry so it's always good to bless them up and show respect.
Another example of this is when producers started the riddim revival, I was hooked on the remake of the Boops Riddim! It's so nice they had to do it twice!
He goes by the name of CHRONIXX and he's coming by storm! I've been hearing about Chronixx for a while and the moment I heard his music, I can finally say that I know what all the fuss is about. The man is TALENTED!!
I just love his voice, it seems so clear and pure.. similar to I Wayne's vocals. Not to mention his lyrics are official!! Yeah, I can surely get use to this..
New York City is where all the fun is!!! Just last night (03.22.12) at the Best Buy Theater; Spragga Benz, Stephen Marley, Damian "JR GONG" Marley and Julian Marley alongside the Ghetto Youth Crew came out to give us an AMAZING show.
If you missed it.. you missed out! But if you check out the video below you can catch an exclusive sneak peek!
Lady Saw is the realest BAD GYAL in the dancehall industry! She's the only one who can bring up certain argument like the "okra slime" with no apologies! I love her!!
Capleton is always burning up something.. similar to how he burn up this track!
This is one of the latest releases from KING SHANGO for 2012 and it's already proving to be a favorite amongst the masses. As a springtime treat, he'll be performing in NY, Washington DC and possibly a few more states along the east coast!!!
Capleton is one of those artists that you can't miss out on when he's performing in your area because he always delivers an amazing performance that literally lights up the stage. He's full of energy, has a zest for life and once you leave that performance, you'll feel music coming out of your pores! It's an amazing experience..
On February 26th, despite the rain, 17 year old Trayvon Martin went to the store for a bag of skittles and a can of ice tea for him and his little brother to share. On his way back from the store as he was returning to his fathers home he was spotted by 28 year old, George Zimmerman; the "Neighborhood Watch Captain".
According to reports, he noticed that Trayvon was walking in the rain and claimed that he looked "suspicious".
George Zimmerman called the local police department and stated, "He looks like he's up to no good, or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around looking at houses."
At one point, the 911 dispatcher asked, "Are you following him?? Zimmerman confirmed that he was following the young boy. The dispatcher continued to say, "Okay, we don't need you to do that." But of course, that didn't stop him!
Instead, he took matters into his own hands.
According to residents of the gated community, there were numerous complaints and police reports prior to this particular incident about Zimmerman and his bizarre tactics as Neighborhood Watch Captain.
I find this really depressing because the more I watch the news the more I truly feel like African American's do not get justice in this world. If you listen to the below clip you can literally hear the sounds of the young boy screaming and begging for help before your heard a gunshot blaze, and the screaming stop.
TRAYVON'S PARENTS
Then this scary looking "Neighborhood Watch Captain" goes to the police, admit to killing the young man, simply say that it was in self defense and that's it. A life lost for a young man who haven't even reached the age of 18 and everyone just goes back to bed comfortably tucked underneath their blankets.
If you just LISTEN to the clip, you can clearly hear that this was not a self defense tactic! If Zimmerman was being attacked, why was the young boy begging for mercy?!?!?!?!
This incident happened almost a month ago and this "Neighborhood Watch Captain" have not been arrested, charged, held for questioning, NOTHING! He is free to walk the streets, amongst people like you and I without even a slap on the wrist for bad behavior. Sometimes I feel like I live in the twilight zone. Do I really need to say this is wrong for the criminal justice system to realize that this is wrong?
Below you can listen in to one of Trayvon's neighbors recorded phone call to report that there was someone screaming help outside of her house. Please listen very carefully as you will be able to hear Trayvon's last moments...
It was a good night in Fish Eye when Philip Fraser and a ton of his friends like Sugar Minott (in spirit), Sammy Dread, Tilly Beng, Culture, Junior Demus plus many more who all came out to celebrate his earthstrong. The night was filled with a very cool vibe as I ran through memory lane of all the veterans that was dealing with the place wicked back when my mom and aunts were out at street dances.
That night we heard big tunes like, "I don't want no ice cream sound.. that's too soft for me!!!" and tunes like "Stop ya fussing and fighting, brother!" OMG and what about Junior Demus with his song, "She makes my love come down.. oooh she makes my loooooooove come down!"
Just to sit back and hear the crowd banging on walls and tables wid two finger inna di air ... times like these are fit for good memories!
Big up to the Oldies but Goodies, all of the artists who passed through to touch the mic, the old schoolers with all of the wisdom and a BIG big up to Philip Fraser -- I had fun at your birthday bash!!
Reminisce back to a time when tunes like this was the number one hit at your local dance. When a man and woman held each other close and enjoyed a slow dance. I'm talking about one of those "soul to soul" moments. If you're new to good music, you have no idea what "This Magic Moment" is all about, but if you've been jamming from the early days then you know what I mean.
I love this video!! You wouldn't believe the koolaid smile I have on my face right now. This is my type of music!
This video is so sexy without being graphic! It's charming and sexy; entertaining with class. How creative!!
Agent Sasco (or Assassin... whichever you prefer) has always been one of my favorite DJ's and Cecile is sultry, lyrical and has always been the crowd pleaser. You can even see that they're having fun shooting the video.
This is a very nice collaboration.
Jamaica is really showing the world what they're made of in 2012! Big up Jamaica's 50th Anniversary... dis year we a represent!!!!
Dancehall is a global thing, of course it originated in Jamaica but Dancehall has made an impact all across the world. Check out this short clip of Blacka Di Danca as he teaches a dance class in Moscow, RUSSIA!
Dancehall has made it to places I've never even imagined before and its a pleasure to see that the dance class is full to capacity and tun up till it buck up!
There is a new artist hailing out of the REDSQUARE camp that goes by the name of AMLAK and his music is amazing. You may have heard of him in the past, but if not, this video is a great introduction!
To me, it's a reminder to never get caught up where I forget to give thanks for everything and everyone that I'm blessed to share my life with. Many people don't have the love and support of family and friends. I may not have everything that I want, but I have more than enough. And most important, I have life so that means that I have opportunity. Sky's the limit!
This is Amlak showing respect and giving thanks to the almighty. Big up Amlak, anywhere yuh deh!!
This time around I wasn't able to make my way to Konshen's album release party for his latest production, Mental Maintenance but I did hear wonderful things about it. The special event was hosted by superstar Diva Nikki Z so you dun know seh di place did tun up!!
If you went to the actual album release party earlier this week, tell us about it! If not, let the following shots tell a story of it's own. Big up to Allyson Ione for the photos!
My mother always taught me that from the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread. Yes, she recited that scripture more than I wanted to hear it but because of that mi haffi big up every hustla who deh bout.
Even the homeless people, once I see them trying to hustle something, whether it is to wipe my windshield, sing a song or do a dance. Once I see them doing SOMETHING other than showing me the palm of their hand, I big them up and give them some pocket change because at least dem deh deh a try a ting.
The 67 year old Grammy Award winning reggae legend, Burning Spear is speaking out against distributors like Ernie B's Reggae and RAS Records for allegedly shipping bootleg copies of his music.
According to Burning Spear,
"... they bootlegging all of our music and trying to use the police to get us arrested. Time to unite, it's our music that feed them."
Burning Spear is calling for Ernie B's to be shut down.
When Ernie B was contacted, he claimed that he knows of no such offense, according to Ernie B, he has never seen an illegal copy of Spear's music pass through his warehouse.
Oooooh, what a bittersweet feeling. If you know me then you KNOW I had plans for the one name Aidonia. I think we can all agree that I am a bit smitten. Granted, I've never met him before, and no, I didn't really think we would one day run off to a far away land but dammit, I didn't necessarily rule it out either!! LOL
Well, as the bigger person I must give the happy couple a big congratulations. They don't want to disclose too much information about the engagement as yet but be on the look out for clues of a lavish wedding, these things seem to appear out of no where.
The Gully God did it again with another sex(y) tune that gets the wheels in my waistline turning. What a gyal love wine!! Yeah man, turn on this song if you want to see the slow wine!
A tune like this is a must have on your sensual playlist because it gets you in a SWEET mood.
This one was produced by none other than Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor which is no surprise at all, they call him Di Genius for a reason!
